Survivor Cruelty
By Rich Glanzer
What a cruel, cruel game this season of Survivor has become. Though there have been some great episodes and the challenges have never been better, last night’s edition was the 2nd unnecessary harsh twist of the show.
To understand why I think last night’s episode was horrible, you have to understand why I’m drawn to Survivor. I like the fact that you can fight for your Survivor life. I loved that Shii Ann was able to beat Rupert and Boston Rob so she could last another three days. I loved that Kelly in the very first season would have been eliminated probably twice, but both times she won that necklace around her neck. Matthew in the Amazon would have been eliminated, but he did what he had to do to survive. Keith stood on a pole for 10 hours, before begging Tina to get off so he wouldn’t be voted off. He ended up finishing 3rd. These are all great Survivor moments.
Last night, the two people eliminated, had no opportunity for such a moment.
While I don’t think in a million years Williard would have won a challenge, he wasn’t given a chance. And for Angie, what a horrible way to go. She fought for her place in the tribe the whole time, and to be eliminated without having a chance for immunity, is downright wrong. It cost Angie, and it cost us.
In the last two weeks, Jeff and Kim both knew before the challenge started, that they would be going home if their tribe didn’t win. And both didn’t put up a fight. I can guarantee Angie wouldn’t have laid down like those two Survivor Losers did. All Angie was fighting for yesterday was meat, and a taste of winning. But either way, she may have been eliminated.
What a terrible, terrible episode.
- The other cruel twist I was referring to at the beginning, was when the two castaways didn’t get to join a tribe. If that happened to me, I would never get over it. They must have been so excited to play the game, and for the producers to humiliate them like that, is just wrong. Good TV or not. And for the record, it wasn’t even that since all the previews gave the twist away.
- Props go to the Koror tribe for being competitors and giving immunity to Ibrehem. Ibrehem didn’t deserve to be eliminated last night, James did. And James didn’t receive one vote from the Koror tribe. The rewarded Ulong’s best competitors, and didn’t concern themselves with trying to protect the weakest link. This is a true Survivor rarity.
- I really hope Stephanie can pull off a miracle and stay for awhile in this game. She’s the best female competitor by far to ever play this game. And I’d like to see how she’d do against the guys in individual challenges.
