Episode 10: "Exile Island"

by Michele Kevany

Caryn was scratching a line to mark day twenty five
It was a difficult morning for one member of her tribe
After Coby's ousting, Janu said she "felt this huge loss"
Being left out of the tribe's decision had her feeling cross
Katie told Jen that Janu had a "creepy smile on her face"
She felt at Tribal Council Janu had spooked up the place
Janu overheard Katie and asked if school was in session
Katie said she was sorry but that remained her impression
Janu told Katie she shouldn't have said it behind her back
The tribe was surprised that Janu had gone on the attack
Gregg interrupted and called for an end to their feud
Janu said eventually they will all have the same attitude
Gregg thought that Janu was a "buzz kill to have around"
Yet Steph had him feeling his game was on shaky ground
He will keep a tribemate if they are deserving or they tank
Gregg will play with whomever can put a million in his bank
The Koror tribe met Jeff for Reward Challenge number nine
They'll be constructing a tower that a teammate will climb
He said two randomly selected teams will divide the tribe
All the delights of a Palaun feast four will joyfully imbibe
The winners will meet an island High Chief and his clan
They will enjoy local beer, food and dancing in the sand
Twelve pieces of scaffolding were laying on the shore
Six pieces out of twelve belonged to each team of four
One section at a time will be brought into the watery blue
Placing one piece atop another is what they'll need to do
Each team will have a buoy to provide them "assistance"
This challenge will require both stamina and persistence
After their tower is assembled one will climb to the top
Once they've captured a flag into the water they'll drop
The first team to return ashore will reign victorious
They'll be off to a Palauan adventure most glorious
Jeff then spilt the tribe into each pre-selected team
Ian, Steph, Katie and Jen hope a feast they'll glean
They'll be up against Tom, Caryn, Janu and Gregg
For this banquet the teams will have to shake a leg
With Reward at stake there will be no time to dodder
Each team grabbed a scaffolding and ran into the water
Ian and his team worked as one to place their first piece
Caryn and Janu lent no aid after their buoy was reached
They let Tom and Gregg secure their first piece instead
Still when assembly of the second began these four led
Their lead widened after a few dives were made by Janu
She was ahead after both teams had attached piece two
Ian, Steph and Jen worked together to make up ground
Though Katie became winded and started slowing down
After securing piece number three they headed for shore
While their opposition was in the water with number four
They then attached this piece and were on to number five
Ian, Steph and Jen closed the gap, yet Katie took no dive
Her slow performance was putting her teammates in a fix
The other team was at work attaching piece number six
When they finished their tower Janu climbed for the flag
All the while Ian, Jen, Steph and Katie continued to lag
After Janu captured the flag, her weary team swam ashore
Janu stood on the mat first, soon followed by three more
Tom, Gregg, Caryn and Janu sailed off for their Reward
Each was eager to partake of their Palauan smorgasbord
They arrived at an island village and were warmly greeted
The Chief gave each a blessing and then they were seated
In colorful costumes, the native villagers sang and danced
The survivor's were happy to have been given this chance
Gregg said it was good to see what Palauan life was like
When the performance concluded they took a short hike
They entered a "Bai", a traditional Palauan meeting house
Once their banquet had begun, they were quiet as a mouse
They dined on chicken, barbqued ribs and corn on the cob
There was much to consume but most were up for the job
Janu had described it as "a procession of epicardial delight"
But half way through her meal Janu was not looking right
While Tom, Gregg and Caryn gleefully had bones to pick
Janu exited, saying "...think I'm going to make myself sick"
The other's happily remained and enjoyed their island treat
They topped off their meal with something sweet to eat
After finishing the banquet it was time for them to leave
Gregg thought it a shame one feast had gotten the heave
They waved goodbye to the Palauan's and sailed away
These four will always cherish the memory of this day
When they returned to camp their tribemates were eating
Gregg surprised the losing team with a delicious greeting
He had smuggled in food from their Reward's excursion
Steph, Katie, Ian and Jen loved the scaled down version
Janu reached for the food and into it her hand she plied
Having been sick earlier, there was food she hadn't tried
Tom and Katie shook their heads as they watched Janu
Then Katie noticed Caryn felt like a little revisiting too
Steph hoped this would cause their game's to take a dive
An orange colored sky marked an end to day twenty five
The following morning they had treemail in need of reading
A claustrophobic challenge will have all but one retreating
Tom, Jen and Stephanie returned with the treemail in tow
If any are prone to "worry" off to the "jury" they may go
Steph feels without Immunity she'll be gone the next vote
Though they were all nervous as they boarded their boat
Jeff welcomed in Koror, saying a test of nerves was near
An Immunity win will rely on their ability to handle fear
Whoever masters this challenge will escape a Tribal fate
Be the last to remove your head from beneath a steel grate
They will be positioned in the water underneath this barrier
With an incoming tide this challenge will grow ever scarier
Jeff told them in this "test of fear" the first survivor to bail
Will be exiled and off to an unknown island they will sail
For one night this tribemate will need to manage all alone
They'll be given a few items to help them live on their own
The survivors swam under the grate and took their places
With their heads just above water, fear was on a few faces
Tom joked he might have to bail just to get away for awhile
But he decided to stay and settled in for the Immunity trial
After six minutes Jeff thought Janu was looking a little manic
He asked her if the challenge had put her into a state of panic
Saying she was done, Janu bailed and swam to a small pier
Whether she was frightened, cold or both wasn't quite clear
After Janu climbed atop the pier Jeff asked her about fire
He wondered if she had the skills her exile would require
Janu's tribemates must have thought her fate was funny
Jeff noticed their disposition's appeared rather sunny
They did not seem to care that Janu had taken the fall
When Jeff mentioned this Ian said "that's not true at all"
Forty minutes into the challenge, the sea level had risen
Opting out, Caryn swam from beneath the steel prison
Katie soon followed, having reached the end of her best
She joined Caryn and Janu on the pier to await the rest
Steph and Jen both submerged and held their breath
They quit the contest once they had no oxygen left
Those still in the water were Tom, Ian and Gregg
Until Gregg breathed the last bit of air he could beg
The Immunity necklace will go to either Ian or Tom
Using his hands as a snorkel helped Tom stay calm
Ian's head went underwater and that was it for him
After he quit, Tom scored his second Immunity win
Janu was given fishing gear as well as steel and flint
Also water and a machete to aid her overnight stint
Jeff had her board a boat and said the time was nigh
When Janu sailed away her tribe waved "goodbye"
Before the boat carrying her had vanished from sight
Jeff said he would see them at Tribal the following night
Janu arrived on her island and went to work on a flame
She said she was glad to have time away from the game
It took her over two hours to make a much needed fire
After she had one blazing, dancing became her desire
She felt it was "me against them" and was glad to be alone
She had gotten what she wanted and was ready to go home
Janu viewed this overnight exile as a heavenly spiritual sign
Saying of the moon, the stars and the water "it's all mine"
At Koror the next morning Tribal Council was discussed
Gregg told Tom and Ian that voting off Steph was a must
He said Stephanie had survived Ulong and poses a threat
Keeping her over Janu could be a decision they will regret
Tom wanted Steph to stay, as she was a part of his alliance
He talked to Gregg and tried to work a wee bit of defiance
Tom spoke cautiously with Gregg, as not to tip his hand
Gregg was adamant, so Tom would follow his command
He said "it's not where my heart is", but it was a game
Tom added "but anything could happen" just the same
Janu was retuned to Koror on this twenty seventh day
Her tribemates wanted to hear about her overnight stay
She told them her exile started with a few frustrations
But all in all she had no insurmountable tribulations
Steph hoped Janu's increasingly indifferent attitude
Would put off her tribe and gain Steph some latitude
She asked Ian about what they had planned for Janu
Ian said voting her off was what they intended to do
Stephanie was having a hard time believing this talk
She felt at Tribal she'd be the one making that walk
They set sail for Tribal Council as the sunset dipped
Stephanie had a bad feeling her alliance had flipped
Jeff welcomed the survivors and had them take a seat
He then brought in Coby and the setting was complete
Jeff asked Janu if she managed a fire during her "exile"
He also asked if she felt her tribe's send off was a pile
Hearing "yes" twice, Caryn balked at what was said
She disagreed, telling Jeff that was all "in Janu's head"
Jeff asked Tom and Gregg about making their selection
They both said they'd remove a threat for their protection
He asked Katie and Janu why their flame should remain lit
Katie said she posed no threat, Janu sounded ready to quit
Jeff told Janu it seemed as if an ousting would be gratifying
Janu agreed, saying her journey was "completely satisfying"
Ian stated that anyone can choose to lay their torch down
Steph said it kills her that the tribe would keep Janu around
She felt it was difficult when she so badly wanted to play
To know Janu did not care if she was given another day
Jeff asked Tom if he appreciated Steph's drive and desire
He said she'd be an asset on the job, but this is "Survivor"
Jeff asked Janu if she had her way, what would come about
Janu answered Stephanie would stay and she'd be voted out
She said she'd lay down her torch to save Steph's game
Stephanie told Janu not to make the decision in her name
Janu reworded her request, saying she wished to take a bow
She wanted to lay down her torch and end her stay in Palau
Janu took herself out of the game, to the elation of Steph
She gathered her belongings and then stood before Jeff
He said "per your wishes, this game is over for you"
The torch that Jeff snuffed belonged to Janu
