The Survivor Kid

Bruce Kanegai

Mr. Miyagi of Survivor Panama: Exile Island

Nine 9 days into Survivor Panama: Exile Island Bruce Kanegai has been on 2 tribes and banished to exile island twice. He has spent more time in solitude than with his tribemates. In a game where alliances are pivotal to advancing, what are his chances?

First let's start off with a little background on Bruce Kanegai.

In the 1960's, Bruce received the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts and the rank of Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. Currently, he is a fifth-degree black belt, the highest achievable rank in Shotokan, and has taught thousands of students over 40 years.

In the late 70's and early 80's, Bruce was a backpacking instructor Moorpark Community College, the Yosemite Institute and many private organizations. He hiked the entire state of Oregon and in 1980, he set a new record of running the 220-mile John Muir Trail from Mount Whitney to Yosemite National Park.

For 14 years (1978-1992), Bruce was a Police Officer Survival Training Instructor (POST) in California. He assisted in teaching police instructors arrest and control techniques, weapon retention and the side-handle baton.

For the past 34 years, Kanegai has been teaching art at Simi Valley High School. He has been awarded "Teacher of the Year" from The International Rotary Club, The Bravo Award from the Los Angeles Music Center, The Amgen Corporation, The Pasadena Art Center College of Design and the Otis/Parsons Art School.

Bruce has been faced with death 9 times as well as going to the ER, paramedics, and Urgent care 39 times. Including being bitten by a large rattlesnake while golfing three years ago.

Sufficed to say Bruce Kanegai is a competent outdoors man, an expert in Karate, a respected Art teacher and more near death experiences than any feline would care to fathom. In a survival situation he is definitely someone I'd want to have around. I'll just step out of the way when the next near death encounter hits. How many chances can one man get?

With his teaching and Karate background, Bruce is a natural leader. In any circumstance he would take the leadership role. With 58 years of life experience he can't push aside what has become instinct or 2nd nature.
For example, when Bruce joined the dehydrated Cassaya tribe his teaching abilities took over. He informed his tribemates of his survival skills to ease their minds and taught them how to filter water with layered cloth. Hesitant yet desperate, they followed his lead. Later, his grateful students would describe Bruce as their “Savior”.

So how will this help or hurt his chances of becoming Sole Survivor? Bruce cannot help himself but be the person he is, a leader. Being a leader is usually detrimental. But on a tribe of nutballs it could be the best position. He will be seen as the voice of calm and reason.
Bruce has been exiled twice already, and in the world of Survivor that is comparable to 2 near death experiences. Does he have 7 lives left? When he returns from exile Bruce must hike it into high gear. He is 9 days behind the rest of the group. He has to make an alliance with someone, he can't play the Lone Wolf forever.

Mr. Miyagi tip: Man walk on road. Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk down middle, sooner or later, get squished

Pick a side Bruce.
