In the game of Survivor are real friendships formed or are people just friendly because of alliances? I would say the answer to this question is yes and no. Yes, people do become friends during the course of the show but when it gets down to crunch time, no. Winning the game is too important and some people will do anything and say anything to become Sole Survivor.
Dan shouldn't be surprised that Terry voted against him. It wasn't his first clue that Terry would do what was right for himself. When Terry decided he didn't want to keep Ruth and break up an alliance, right then Dan should have realized Terry would do what was best for him.
Dan was loyal to a fault. Even though the rest of The Boy's Club alliance voted against Ruth, Dan stuck to his pact with Ruth. It didn't hurt Dan that he didn't vote with his alliance's decision but it did show that he can keep his word. While Terry tried to get technical, saying that only Dan had made the promise to Ruth Marie, so he wouldn't be going back on his word to vote her out. That showed that Terry was playing the game hard.
Terry was able to separate his emotional ties and make strategic moves to advance in the game. He would stick to his alliance as long as it benefited him. Once his neck was on the line he would do what he had to stay in the game. Dan on the other hand let the friendship get in the way. He once again stayed loyal and would not even entertain the idea of writing Terry's name down. He didn't have the killer instinct to plot against Terry. Dan kept his honor intact but it cost him the game.
In his final words Dan said he understood the tribe's decision, although he believed it was the wrong one, but he considered them friends forever and wished them luck with the rest of the game. Dan is nice guy and left the game with dignity. Maybe too nice to win a cutthroat game like Survivor.
